Back in front of her apartment, G untangles her keys to let herself in.
G has never liked the word let. As in, he let out his room. She imagined that the word might be connected somehow to lend and lent, and she wished these were used in its place. He let the room to her. Not even. The room was a sublet. She was being sub-let stay. It didn’t sound very welcoming. She didn’t think of herself as sub. Not invited, but let in. To let, to allow, to permit, to give in. With the keys the man had let her have, she let herself in. If only a room could be leant, like one friend lends another a book, then would G begin to feel at home?

Home. To borrow one’s home. At fifteen G used to borrow her father’s newspaper and read all the real estate pages. That was her reading: ogling the homes about to be emptied, gutted, then filled with new things. All her life she combed the local newspapers in this way.

In fact, G was always mixing up the words borrow and lend. She was always being teased by an English friend when she said things like ‘Oh that? I can borrow it to you if you want.’ Perhaps it’s because G was more in the habit of borrowing than lending. She borrowed sweaters, magazines, cigarettes, lighters, spoonfuls of her flatmate’s Heidelbeeren-Marmelade, Gemüsebrühe, washing powder.

A crack of cold air. Spring. She closes the window, climbs into the bathtub, sits down, presses her chin against her knees. Her hair in wet strands, greenish and sickly looking. A boring silence. G emerges from the tub, tiptoes over to the window, opens it slightly again, looks out. Is she about to become homeless? Outside the train tracks screech, the roads are covered in slush. G’s money shivers in her purse. She feels the city pulling itself together to throw her out.
